The Salcombe Yawl has a history which goes back at least 200 years to the straight-stemmed, transom-sterned, yawl rigged local fishing vessels of the late 18th-early 19th century. Since Salcombe Town Regatta of 1968, when the yawls raced outside the harbour for the first time and, they have gone from strength to strength.
These days they number in excess of 180 and race regularly in the estuary, attracting big fleets at their open meetings and the Yacht Club regatta. They are built and refitted by a range of people including Michael Attfield, Kevin Driver, Stones boatyard and Salcombe Boatstore.
